Improving Broadband Speeds

The Parish Council have been working towards improving the broadband speeds in Burton on the Wolds, Walton on the Wolds and Hoton since 2011.

The Parish Council submitted a business case to Matthew Kempson at Leicestershire County Council to put the case for investment in super-fast broadband in the Wolds. The business case has been put together by representatives from the parish councils of Burton on the Wolds, Cotes and Prestwold, Walton on the Wolds and Hoton.

Super-fast Broadband Update

The cabinet in the centre of Burton on the Wolds has been upgraded to super-fast broadband. This cabinet also serves Prestwold.

Unfortunately the second cabinet in the village, which serves the houses on and around Hubbard Road, was not upgraded this year. Premises served from this cabinet will therefore not receive super-fast broadband, even though the rest of the village will. Each cabinet costs the same to upgrade, and so BT and Leicestershire County Council have prioritised cabinets based on the number of premises who would benefit from each upgrade. As the main cabinet (by the roundabout) serves almost 500 premises, it is deemed economically viable. The Hubbard Road cabinet serves only 50, meaning less benefit for similar cost. The Parish Council continued to pursue alternative means of upgrading this cabinet.

Leicestershire County Council announced, in April 2015, that Hubbard Road and Mantelcroft Drive will be included in the second phase of their super-fast broadband project. Broadband should be available in these areas towards the end of 2016. Whilst we would have liked it to be available sooner, it is good news that the cabinet on Hubbard Road is included in the roll-out.
